Sax Zim Bog Birding Festival

Sax Zim Bog Festival Wraps Up after 13 Years

The TMDB met in July to discuss the future of the Birding Festival, at that time it was the consensus of the group to no longer sponsor/coordinate/offer the Birding Festival, but we wanted to think about it one more month. We also wanted to confer with the leadership of Friends of the Sax-Zim Bog who were a valuable and necessary partner in making the Birding Festival happen. The Friends of the Sax-Zim Bog agreed with our rationale for no longer sponsoring the Birding Festival, and indicated they are not interested in taking over the sponsorship of the Winter Birding Festival.

There were numerous reasons for no longer sponsoring the festival, but lack of help, the challenge of finding guides, the dramatic changes in birding technology (Ebird, Facebook, etc), and the tremendous success of the Friends of the Sax-Zim Bog in providing year round educational opportunities are just a few of the reasons discussed regarding the continuing TMDB sponsorship of the Festival.

On Tuesday, August 17 the TMDB officially voted to NO longer sponsor/coordinate/offer the Sax-Zim Bog Winter Birding Festival. The decision was a difficult one to make and the vote was not easy to take, but the TMDB felt they could no long coordinate a successful Birding Festival.

We want to thank all the birders and supporters who have made this event wonderful throughout the years. The TMDB is very proud of the 13 Festivals we sponsored; over one thousand individuals from across the world attended our Festivals and enjoyed the Sax-Zim Bog Winter Birding Festival. We are going to miss all the friends we have made through the years. Thank you again for your participation, support, and help through the past 13 festivals.

The TMDB encourages you to visit the Friends of the Sax-Zim Bog website (www.saxzim.org) and take advantage of all the opportunities they offer to explore the Bog year-round.
