A warm welcome to all of our birding friends from the members of the Toivola-Meadowlands Development Board, Friends of the Sax-Zim Bog, the residents of Meadowlands and neighboring communities. We are in the process of planning our 10th Annual Sax-Zim Bog Winter Birding Festival and we hope you will be able to join us this February 17, 18, 19, 2017. The festival is sponsored by the Toivola-Meadowlands Development Board in cooperation with the Friends of the Sax-Zim Bog.
Meadowlands is a typical small northern Minnesota city. It served a large farming community from its beginnings. Immigrants from a variety of countries came here to clear land, plant and harvest large gardens, raise animals and children. Religious communities built churches and all worked together to make the town their center. There were grocery stores, gas stations, auto and machinery dealerships, restaurants and theaters.
As has happened with many small towns, residents began commuting to larger cities to work and while there they could also do much of their shopping. Gradually local businesses closed and today we have one part time gas station and one café and lounge.
Although members of the area travel longer distances to shop, we continue to love the country life and what it provides us on a daily basis. Enjoying wildlife is a large part of that. Deer, bear and other smaller wildlife are frequently seen crossing our yards and a large variety of bird species create a musical chorus to entertain us, every day, all year around.
When we learned that people were coming to the Sax-Zim Bog to enjoy our beautiful winter birds, we put our heads together to try to figure out a way to make their experience more enjoyable, and to show these visitors some of our country hospitality. E-mail queries sent with tentative ideas, resulted in an offer from Duluth area birding guide, Mike Hendrickson. Mike agreed to assist our Development Board in sponsoring a winter birding festival that would showcase the beautiful Sax-Zim Bog area.
As we have limited space in which to gather, we limit registrations to 150. We encourage local residents to join us at the Friday and Saturday night programs so they too might get to meet some of the folks who come here to enjoy our avian population and enjoy our wonderful evening programs. Over the past eight years visitors have come from 39 states, as well as Australia, the UK, the Philippines and Italy.
Please consider joining us for a weekend of fun and exciting bird watching.
See you in February!!!
